The Peruvian Horse or Paso Peruvian or Paso Peruano is a hotblood.  A purebred Spanish horse that was selectively bred for their gait after arriving in Peru. Because of the isolation of the breed for over 400 years, the Peruvian Paso has evolved as one of the purest breeds of horses in the world and as such is extremely unique in the horse world.  Due to this isolation, no outside blood has been introduced into the Peruvian breed.  With very selective breeding coupled with such factors as the harsh climate and feed, served to modify succeeding generations and create a new breed which possess characteristics different from those of any other horse in the world.

    The Gait

The trademark of this breed is the special, inherited and completely natural four beat lateral gait.  The Peruvian Paso performs two variations of the four-beat gait. The first, the 'paso llano', is isochronous, meaning that there are four equal beats in a 1-2-3-4 rhythm (left hind, left fore, right hind, right fore).  This being the preferred gait of the breed.  The second gait being the 'sobreandando', is faster.  Instead of four equal beats, the lateral beats are closer together in a 1-2, 3-4 rhythm, with the pause between the forefoot of one side to the rear of the other side is longer.

Theses gaits are equivalent to the trot and canter in many other breeds of horses.  The gait is natural and does not require extensive training.  Purebred Peruvian Paso foals can be seen gaiting alongside their dams within a few hours of their birth.

This unique gait to the breed supplies essentially none of the vertical bounce that is characteristic of the trot, and hence posting (moving up and down with each of the horse's footfalls) is unnecessary.  It is also very stable making the Peruvian one of the most 'sure footed' breeds of horses around, as the execution of the gait means there are always two, and sometimes three, feet on the ground.   This makes the Peruvian a favorite with riders who have back injuries or troubles as they will feel no strain or jolting while riding.

    "llano de paso"

The paso llano is a broken gait. It consist of a permanent, harmonic, and rhythmic tapping in which the animal makes a gentle and pleasant alternating movement. It is a quick advance in which the center of the horse's gravity stays almost immobile, producing a smooth ride.

The paso llano is executed with a distinctive action in the front legs, called 'termino', a graceful, flowing movement in which the forelegs are rolled towards the outside as the horse strides forward, much like the arm motion of a swimmer. Termino is a spectacular and beautiful natural action. It is not a wing or paddle and originates in the shoulder giving the horse the ability to swing the leg forward with minimum vertical force back. Both the gait and the flashy leg action are transmitted 100% to the offspring.

    "Sobreandando"

The second gait, the sobreandando, is faster. Instead of four equal beats, the lateral beats are closer together in a 1-2, 3-4 rhythm, with the pause between the forefoot of one side to the rear of the other side is longer.

This characteristic gait was utilized for the purpose of covering long distances over a short period of time without tiring the horse or rider.  Thanks to its unique, inborn, four beat lateral gaits, the Peruvian Paso horse is undoubtedly the smoothest riding horse in the world.

Our Other Horses

Brisa de la Pradera and her Filly~Alteza de la Pradera

More of Brisa de la Pradera and Alteza.  Alteza is showing off her peruvian gait at only 2 days old!

Alteza at 3 months old.

My 7yr old gelding Ocaso, also know as Cody.  This horse is my super good, lesson, begginer, trail, and all around, do anything horse.  (As you can tell I just love him to pieces!)

Here I am riding my moms' gelding Cheecho & our neigbour riding Cody.  This was taken coming back from a long trail ride this fall, and yes - she rode Cody all the way, bareback with only a halter.

Me and my trail buddy Cheecho again.

Yep, you guessed it, this one isn't a peruvian paso, but we love her just as much. This is our 14hh  Mammoth Donkey Jenna. She isn't registered but she is good stock, and we are hoping to breed her next year, we just haven't decided if we should breed her to a Mammoth Jack or Our Peruvian Stallion Paladin, which would give us a gaited Hinny.  And hinny isn't a typo; for those of you who don't know - a mule is off a female horse and a male donkey, but a hinny is off a female donkey and a male horse.
